King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub

“Today, we snack in the tub.”

King Bidgood's In The Bathtub (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition)
In this Caldecott Honor picture book, King Bidgood is in the bathtub and won’t come out (much to the distress of the palace). Different members of his family and court try to urge him out with the obligations of the day, but King Bidgood insists on performing his duties in the tub. Finally, the page literally pulls the plug on the day’s tub activities.
We happen to own a castle and some fancy dress up clothes, so I concocted some King Bidgood style fun for my kids by combining our play castle, dress up clothes, and a pool to inspire their imaginations and bring to life the picture book.
In the book, King Bidgood eats lunch in the bathtub. Don Wood’s beautiful illustrations show a feast beyond compare, so I knew I would need to simplify to recreate a King Bidgood meal. Since my children are small, I chose to let them eat a water resistant snack in the pool: watermelon. (Note: Since my kids were only in a kiddie pool with plenty of adult supervision, I was comfortable allowing them to eat watermelon while playing. Please be careful not to allow children to eat food that they could choke on while swimming.)
As the photos prove, King Bidgood (and the baby princess) thought that eating watermelon in a castle in a pool was a fun, magical experience. And just in case you missed it, don’t forget to read about our dancing in the pool from a couple of weeks ago:
If you love imaginative books, you will love the books by Audrey and Don Wood. I read many of their books while preparing for this post, and I was amazed by the detailed, amazing illustrations and the imaginative plots and ideas in this team’s picture books.
I’ve compiled for you a short list of their books via Amazon, where you can find more information on each book. Your local library most likely has many of the Woods’ books available! (Note: I have not read all of these books, although I have read many of them. Some of these books are not by both Audrey and Don.)
Check out my co-hosts. I’m sure you will find tons of great ideas today on their sites:
Now it’s your turn to link-up any and all posts about books by Audrey and/or Don Woods!
Don’t forget to mark your calendar for August 20, 2012. We will be featuring award winning author/illustrator Kevin Henkes. Due to the popularity of the virtual book club, Toddler Approved has chosen to allow open the club up to multiple co-hosts and continue to feature authors. We also will be broadening our reach with a Facebook page and contact with publishers. If you are a blogger who would be interested in co-hosting this club, I welcome you to visit our Facebook page or contact Toddler Approved.
