Summary: A Secret Keeps
A little boy anticipates a promised secret waiting for him at his Grampa’s country home. He begs his grandparents to show him the surprise, but all that they will tell him is, “Finders, keepers” and “A secret is for keeping.” As the boy wanders and plays around the farm he looks for the secret in every nook and cranny. But, when the moon shines bright that night, he finally finds the secret hidden in the barn: a litter of cats. He picks one to be his very own kitten. After all, “A secret is for keeping.”
It must be full of secrets
whispered in the night.
Show me, moon, what’s hiding
In the shadows of your light.
It streaks a silver sliver,
a moonbeam tightrope on the floor.
Heel to toe, I cross it
and slip out the kitchen door.

Heather M. Solomon’s brightly painted scenes will delight both children and parents. The boy’s imagination sparkles in his eyes as he anticipates his secret. Her illustrations perfectly intertwine Chall’s poem.
Comments: A Secret Keeps
A Secret Keeps would be a wonderful picture book to engage your child’s imagination in poetry. Chall’s poetry rhymed and played with words but never sounded childish or boring. Coupled with Solomon’s excellent artwork, this book was a delight to read and definitely would make a welcome addition to a children’s book collection.

The art on the cover is very appealing. I’ll bet my buddies would like this, too.
The artwork inside is every bit as beautiful as the cover. I wish I had an interior spread to display here. I may try to get permission to include one. Thanks for stopping by, Suzanne!
